about

This recording documents a four-hour durational performance in my home studio in Chicago, which was live-streamed as part of a "Make Music New York" event organized by Ensemble Ipse called "Siteworks at Home - Virtual Happening" on June 21, 2020. Many thanks to Joseph DiPonio, Miguel Frasconi, and Scott Smallwood who also performed, and to Max Duykers who took the lead on organizing the event.

This mode of performance, repurposing household machines and objects in search of their musical potential, is something I have been working out with Scott Smallwood in our duo Evidence for the past 15 years, mostly as a series of performances we call "Losperus". I enjoy it because the process of learning how to do it never ends. It seems to be impossible to become good at it: all success is temporary, entropy never lets up. During this performance, my thoughts turned often to analogies with throwing pottery, without ever yielding shapes destined for the kiln.

The recording has been very lightly edited to remove two brief moments of inactivity and a few microphone explosions that would be unkind to your ears - otherwise the journey is preserved in full. Track divisions are provided only to render this long recording navigable, and to highlight the 20th track, a moment of blissful acoustic stasis that, after nearly four hours of searching, felt like an arrival. I hope you enjoy listening.

The release date of March 13, 2021 marks one complete year of pandemic lockdown for me. I dedicate this recording to all who have been lost, and to those who carry on in their absence.
