This album documents the experience of walking through my sound installation "Six Accompaniments for Solo Voice," which was commissioned for an exhibition called "The Chicago Sound Show" curated by Laura Steward and Sam Pluta at the University of Chicago in Fall 2019. Situated in the campus's Snell-Hitchcock Quad, the installation featured six benches outfitted with speakers, each providing a different accompaniment for the ceaseless vocalization of the nearby Searle Chemistry Laboratory’s ventilation system. Each accompaniment is played quietly. The music sits under the HVAC voice, supporting it and drawing out its rhythms, tones, and harmonic structure.

Why do we create such thoughtlessly noisy spaces? Why does that noise sometimes also contain beauty? My feelings about all of this are actively ambivalent. I situate myself in a space that precedes the asking of these important questions. From there, I am listening and responding to what I hear, using the tools I know.

This recording was made in December 2019, a slow walk from bench to bench, stopping at each to leave the acoustic space of the Quad and retreat for a moment into the software that generated these sounds, before returning. After the final bench, we travel to the roof of the Chemistry Lab for a tour through the singing apparatus up close.
